What you'll learn in this metal working class:

This course introduces students to knife making through an immersive experience of making a custom knife. It is designed for beginners who want to get a hands-on introduction to metal working and knife making, and take home a beautiful product.

The course is divided into two sessions:

The first session focuses on knife design and initial steel forming and preparation, including creating the profile of their knife and the bevel that will become the sharpened edge of the knife.  The knife you create will then be heat treated and tempered by one of our craftspeople in preparation for the second session.

The second session focuses on refining and finishing the knife. Students shape wood scales for the handle, mount the material to the knife, give the handle a waterproof seal, polish the blade, and complete the project by sharpening and honing the edge.

What You’ll Be Making

Guests can choose from 4 classic knife designs – a French Chef, a vegetable slicer, a cleaver, and a hunting knife.   Guests will be able to scale the knife and handle so it fits perfectly in their hand.  We’ll provide everything needed, including a couple options for handle materials and finish.

This course focuses on entry-level skills in knife making, some aspects of woodworking, and the basics of design with respect to functionality—how to make a product that works well for specific purposes.

No prior experience is necessary.

Hi can you offer more information about the teacher?
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! Regarding the instructor Liam, after spending 4 years apprenticing with welders, blacksmiths, and motorcycle mechanics, Liam brings his metalworking knowledge to Brooklyn, hoping to help others create things that are both beautiful and practical. He hopes to one day design and builds rocket engines. Additionally, he is studying aerospace engineering at NYU.
Answer from Dani
I just took the course with Liam and thought he did an incredible job of making complex topics accessible. He is clearly passionate about this kind of work and is very approachable.

An excellent class with a patient and knowledgeable teacher. My only small issue is the steel used in the class develops rust spots on the finished knife too easily. I would recommend this to anyone interest in learning the basics of knife making.

Fantastic class— Liam helped encourage each participant’s creativity (which led to some really cool looking knives) and did a great job guiding the group through the process. You will feel like you’ve come away with a new skill!

Great class and great instructor. If you like to learn and create then this is a great class for you. I recommend thinking about the type of knife you want to make. Look up examples. Try not to get too complex if this is your first go at it. The class size being 6 people is a good amount where you don't have to wait too long on machines. Complimentary water bottles are a nice touch.

Great experience! Nothing to be intimidated about at all. Instructor was a real pleasant fellow and very approachable. He made it very easy to learn and follow along all the steps towards crafting your own handmade knife. Highly recommend......

The teacher was great and we were able to complete our knives. It would have been good to have a few more working spaces, but otherwise I had a great experience.
