Watercolors, Illumination and Gilding

Today Rosemary Buczek, an artist renowned for her calligraphic skills with illuminations including gilding techniques, will share her skills in gilding, drawing and designing with the illuminated letter, as well as watercolor painting techniques. This will be a rare opportunity to be introduced to the beautiful art of illumination of the Renaissance, but continues to flourish today. We will learn the basic forms of the versal or Lombardic letter, and how to apply the size which adheres the gold on the design whether on paper, glass, ceramics and more. In this class we will work on watercolor paper and gild a design that will whet your appetite to begin to gild on any surface. You will be surprised at what you can accomplish (and how much fun you can have) with just a few basics steps.

Note: A $35 materials fee is payable to the instructor: watercolor paper, watercolor and/or gouache, 2 brushes, size for gilding, 2 sheets of 23K gold, alphabet forms, and handouts. Supplies: please bring pan for mixing colors, pencil, eraser, ruler and extra sable brushes if you have any.
