Discover the Best Cake Decorating Classes in Seattle

Decorated cakes have a long history as part of our celebrations and social gatherings. From weddings to birthdays, promotions to baby showers, this deliciously sweet treat is the centerpiece to every party table. Home to well over fifty bakeries, Seattle has a booming wedding industry and hosted a historic number of weddings in 2022

The origin of cake decorating is still a bit of a mystery. Elaborately decorated cakes became widespread during the 1600-1700s and their popularity grew in 1769 when Mrs. Raffald published The Experienced English Housekeeper with detailed recipes for cake, marzipan, and icing.

While every cake starts with the most simple ingredients like eggs, flour, sugar, and butter, it is the intricate final decorations that bring the dessert to life. Fondant, buttercream, sugar crystals, and edible pearls (among many other ingredients) can all be combined to create an exquisite design that your guests are sure to both savor and remember.

Why You Should Learn Cake Decorating in Seattle

Seattle is home to several well-known cake shops like Byen Bakery, Lady Grey Cakes, and Cakes of Paradise, according to Seattle Met. It’s also home to a booming wedding industry that caters to both local couples and those seeking a bustling city for a destination wedding. It is this combination that makes Seattle a truly special place to study cake decorating, providing novices with a large pool of expert bakers and decorators from which to learn and draw inspiration.

Living in a city as large as Seattle can be overstimulating at times. Navigating public transit and living in a more densely populated area can often lead to increased stress. Decorating cakes allows you to focus on a single task and provides you with a creative outlet, both of which can help decrease anxiety and stress. Creating something with your hands can be extremely rewarding and offering that creation as a gift to someone else can elevate your mood.

Looking to make new friends? Try joining a cake decorating class in Seattle. You’ll have a love for baking and decorating to serve as the catalyst for your new friendship. Have a new neighbor or coworker? Gifting them a one-of-a-kind cake can help them feel welcome and encourage connection.

Becoming an expert cake decorator can be a very profitable career move. The average cost of a wedding in Seattle is around $44,000 and the price of a wedding cake can range from $350 to more than $1000, so there is certainly demand for high-quality cakes. When you also consider birthdays, promotions, and baby and bridal showers, decorating cakes can easily be a full-time job.

Whatever your reasons for learning to decorate cakes, you’re likely to find even more benefits as you improve your skills and expand your knowledge.

Virtual Cake Decorating Classes

Online cake decorating classes may offer more benefits than you think. There are often more classes available virtually and they allow you to attend from anywhere. While students are typically required to source their materials and equipment, there’s no need to worry about traffic, parking, or any of the stressors of commuting.

While there aren’t currently online cake decorating classes available, there are several baking courses that will teach similar skills. "Great British Bake Off" Classics teaches participants to recreate their favorite dishes from the iconic British show. Each student will receive a take-home recipe for lemon poppy-seed drizzle cake, too!

Another delicious hands-on experience is the Sweet & Savory Cream Puff course. Hosted over Zoom, bakers will master the art of pâte à choux (puff pastries) and create both a savory option and a classic version with chocolate ganache and whipped cream. You’ll walk away with recipes and skills that are sure to wow any guest.

Or, you can refine your more technical baking skills in this French macaron class where students will make, flavor, pipe, and bake their very own macarons!
