Learn how to create beautiful prints using contemporary and traditional woodblock printmaking methods.
Class 1: Basics - Start with a 5x5"" block which I will prep. Take people outside to sketch straight onto the block. Teach people how to use the tools, line making, how to use both white and black lines with a block. More or less get comfortable with the medium. Give a basic tutorial on how to ink and print a block.
Class 2: Different techniques Make a print with only vertical lines on grain. It’s one of my favorite intro projects to do! teach people how to prep their own blocks and tare their own paper.
Class 3: Color and reduction woodcuts (multiple layer prints) Have people bring in a photocopy of an image they would like to be their subject matter (I'll bring extra) Teach how to do a photo transfer onto wood. Teach registration. Carve and print the first layer.
Class 4: Continued Carve and print the second layer. (a third layer for more advanced or ambitious people)
Class 5: Bring it home A fun last day. Have people make something fun and quick. Or, explore or revisit anything they wanted to know more about during the class. Learn how to print at home with limited equipment. Final show and art swap.
Materials to Bring to class:
1: Woodblock printmaking carving tools (make sure they are for wood and not linoleum)
