Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this watercolor class:

This class is a good fit for the beginning artist, or one who has been painting with watercolor or fluid acrylics and looking to move to the next level. Learn to "dance" with these mediums under a master of traditional and experimental techniques.

Who should take this class:
  • Anyone who is curious about, or has been painting with, watercolor or fluid acrylics.
  • Anyone who wants to learn new techniques and reach for the next level in their skills.
  • Anyone seeking to grow their skills with like minded artists in community.
Here is the list of suggested materials:

Paint

Avoid cheap, student grade paint. Recommended watercolor brands are Daniel Smith, Windsor & Newton, Holbein, American Journey or LUKAS ~ the instructor uses a basic palette of LUKAS Colors:

Watercolor:
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Burnt Umber
  • Cadmium Red Light
  • Indigo
  • Lemon Yellow
  • Permanent Red
  • Raw Sienna
  • Windsor & Newton Quinacridone Gold
You may add other colors once you decide the kind of “voice” you’d like to project in your work.

Acrylic:
  • Hansa Yellow Light
  • Gamboge
  • Quinacridone Gold
  • Cadmium Red Light
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Magenta
  • French Ultra Blue
  • Prussian Blue
  • Black and White
That is a pretty good start unless you want some earthier colors like Burnt Umber and Yellow Oxide or Yellow Ochre. Golden is a fine brand.

Paper
The instructor recommends to use Arches paper. 15”x22” (half sheet) or 18”X24”. Comes in lots of weights and textures, even blocks which are great for newbies. He prefer Arches 140# Cold Press, but there is a smooth Hot Press and Rough (uh, rough, DUH!). Both have downfalls over CP and he can tell you why in class, as well as why there is NO STRATHMORE PAPER ALLOWED!

Brushes
  • Flats: wash brush 3” or 4”, 1”, 1/4", 1/8"
  • Rounds: 1, 3, 6 & a Rigger Brush
Tools and Surfaces
  • Watercolor Palette (12 to 16 wells)
  • Metal butcher tray (optional)
  • X -acto knife (# 11 blades)
  • Blue Tape (2" - Blue painters tape by 3M #2090)
  • Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (WalMart)
  • Small clips (4)
  • Drafting Dust brush
  • Small hair dryer
  • Stamping materials (to be shown in the first class)
  • Art board 1” larger than paper you work on (Utrecht ~ type in MP Code #MP-22873-001 at website http://www.utrechtart.com)

Do not feel obligated to purchase everything.

Art on 30th

The building that is now Art on 30th once housed the Morse Security Company. We have left the original mosaic logo in the lobby floor as an homage to the building’s history. The original Samuel Morse was an artist made famous by his portrait of American President John Adams. He also invented the Morse...
