Teaches at The Art Studio NY

Claire Wyman is a New York City artist and art educator who believes making art is a joyful activity that should be accessible to all people. In her teaching practice, Claire encourages her students to express themselves to the fullest and experience fulfillment from what they are creating while discovering a personal, expressive style that is meaningful to them. She combines her depth of artistic experience and her own innate drive to learn in order to support her students to grow to their full potential as artists, a journey that continues outside the classroom and into the world in everyday life. When she was a young child growing up in West Hartford, Connecticut, Claire attended a Cartooning for Beginners Art Class at the West Hartford Art League, and she quickly fell in love with art and pursued art as her passion and ultimately, as her career.

Claire’s primary artistic focus of late has been working in editorial illustration and comics, which have appeared in renowned publications including The New Yorker. She earned her BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design with a concentration in Literary Arts & Studies.

Claire has worked with young students of all ages, ranging from elementary school to high school, and she has guided and mentored many kids and teens with the development of their art school portfolios. Having worked in the professional illustration field, Claire is eager to share inspiration, techniques, tips and advice with students who may be interested in a career in illustration. While much of her professional artwork focuses on drawing, watercolor based artwork and digital art, she has vast experience in creating artwork with acrylic paint, gouache, oil paint, printmaking techniques and more.

Claire’s favorite artistic practice is to people-watch and draw daily human interactions. As a teacher, Claire encourages students to think critically about their own artwork as well as fostering curiosity in others. Discussing art is an important part of her teaching philosophy, and Claire enjoys conversing with her students around the understanding of why we are drawn to specific styles of artwork. Claire is excited to bring her depth of knowledge and passion for artistic expression to all of her students at The Art Studio NY.

I thoroughly enjoyed this class because I learned about diverse aspects of drawing -- shading, perspective, form, contrast -- in a profound and accessible way. Clare and Alexis are excellent instructors -- informative, compassionate and enthusiastic. They offer the kind of encouragement that makes us look forward to the next class. Thank you so much inspiring me to take more courses in drawing. I would love to take a course at the Met, and especially at the Cloisters, if you offer instruction in the venue. Warm wishes, Elizabeth Gorski New York City www.crosswordnation.com

Class was great. Painting techniques were broken down into easily understandable movements we watched and then practiced on 3 different trees. Variation welcomed and feedback on each of our pieces. Really worthwhile.

It was wonderful to take the opportunity to draw, with a group at The Met. The group were very warm , and welcoming. It’s extremely intimidating to pull out your pencils and start to draw in such an esteemed location. Claire our instructor, eased us into the process, starting with blind contour drawings. The use of abstraction, is a great tool to ease expectations and give you the confidence to continue working and practicing your mark making. The 2 hours flew by, and some people decided to stay and continue the process after the class had finished. Thank you Claire for the encouragement and advice. I would highly recommend this class.
