What you'll learn in this basic chinese mandarin class:

Maybe you don’t know anything more than “nĭ hăo” and “xièxie,” or you’ve taken a decade off. Either way, you’re ready to change that!

Beginner Mandarin Chinese 1 is perfect for you if you're completely new to the language and you want to get the basics down to start speaking conversational Chinese.

WHO THIS CLASS IS FOR

Start here if you've never studied Chinese before or if you've taken a decade off and need a refresher.

HOW YOU'LL LEARN

With a small group (averaging six students per class and capped at ten), you'll have an opportunity to engage in conversational Spanish with other language learners with realtime feedback from the instructor.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

Basics of reading and writing pinyin. Chinese tones and word order. Question formation. Chinese numbers, dates, and times. Measurement and particles.

WHAT YOU'LL LEAVE WITH

By the end of our level one course, you'll know the basics of reading and writing pinyin, Chinese tones and word order, question formation, Chinese numbers, dates, and times, and measurement and particles.

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.

Refund Policy

Plans change—we totally get it. That’s why you have until 7 days prior to the start date of your class to make any cancelations or same-level transfers. After that, refunds cannot be offered under any circumstance and for transfers, there may be a fee. (Exception: If you’re in an incorrect level placement for a language class, we’ll make sure to get you into the right one).

The cancellation policy for private and makeup lessons is as follows: 24 hour notice is expected for cancellation of any weekday (before 6pm) lessons. Otherwise, you will still be charged. Weeknight (after 6pm) or weekend private or makeup lessons cannot be cancelled.

Will this class prepare me for the HSK level 1 test?

Hi there! The course isn't designed for test preparation -- the goal is for students to be able to use Chinese in real-life situations (traveling for work or leisure, among friends and family, etc) and while the course could be supplementary, the school would recommend you to take another course specifically designed for the HSK test.

The teacher is very knowledgeable, patient and efficient. She really makes everyone feel welcome and slows down the pace when needed. She is a great teacher (laoshi) and the other students in the class are supportive of one another.
