What you'll learn in this printing class:

For anyone missing hands-on photographic processes, cyanotypes and anthotypes are fun, safe and easy wasy to print at home. This class will give you the knowledge and confidence to start making prints with minimal space and resources. Classes will start with a history and explanation of the process followed by demonstrations and time to work. Finally, considerations are made for taking prints to the next level including layering, toning and alternate substrates. Students will leave with the ability to make beautiful prints whether in an at-home or studio environment.

Day 1

• Introductions

• History of Cyanotypes

• Explanation of Materials

• Overview of the Process

• Photogram Examples

• Basic Process Demonstration (Photogram)

• Time to make 1 print.

• Homework: Make 5 photograms showing object, texture, image, and a combination

Day 2

• Review student work

• Process Review

• Examples

• Considerations for Negatives/Objects for printing

• Alternate washing techniques

• Time to work

• Wrap-up and questions

• Homework: Make 5 prints from different negative types – negatives, printouts, cutouts, drawings.

Day 3

• Review student work

• Next steps

o Layering

o Wet printing

o Alternative materials

• Time to work

• Homework: Make a print with a minimum of 3 layers

Day 4

• Review student work

• Bleaching/Toning

• Anthotype History/Examples

• Anthotype Demonstration

• Homework: One anthotype. Send in 5 final prints for student showcase next week.

Day 5

• Final wrap-up: Discussion of processes, questions and issues.

• Showcase of student work

Students will are required to purchase cyanotype chemistry beforehand. Bostick & Sullivan is recommended

Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.

Refund Policy
A $25 administrative fee will be charged on all refund requests. The request must arrive greater than one week prior to the workshop start date. No refunds will be provided for requests arriving one week or less prior to the workshop start date.

Upon receipt of a refund request, students will be provided the option of receiving course credit towards the purchase of another workshop. If a student elects to receive credit, the administrative fee is not charged, and a voucher for the amount of the applicable workshop fee will be sent to the student’s email address or credited online at the discretion of the Los Angeles Center of Photography.

On occasion a workshop may cancel due to low enrollment or unforeseen instructor conflicts. If such a case occurs, all students will be refunded in full. The Los Angeles Center of Photography does not take responsibility for non-refundable airline tickets, hotel expenses, or any other costs that may be attributable towards enrolling in a workshop.
