Elle Barnes

Teaches at New York Botanical Garden

Elle Barnes is a Ph.D. candidate in Biological Sciences at Fordham University specializing in Ecology and Systematics. Her research integrates field observation and experimental manipulation of microbial communities in forest ecosystems. Currently, her dissertation is on the assembly of microbial communities of a woodland salamander, the eastern redback, and how these communities protect the salamander from the deadly amphibian disease, chytridiomycosis.

She is particularly interested in urban ecosystems and how communities assemble over space and time. Previously, she studied avian and plant communities throughout NYC while completing her Bachelors degree in Environmental Studies at NYU.
