Jessica Hughes

Teaches at The Art Studio NY

Jessica Hughes has been teaching art to all ages for 13 years. While she is originally from Connecticut, she began her teaching career in Massachusetts, where she attended Montserrat College of Art and earned her BFA in Painting. A year after graduating, she attended Salem State University for her Master's in Art Education. During her time at Salem State, she earned representation at a New York City art gallery, and also earned the Certificate of Excellence Award granted to students who went beyond what was expected of them in school. Jessica eventually made her way back to Connecticut, where she worked at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum (ACAM) in Ridgefield, as a Museum Attendant and Visitor Experience Assistant. Her experience at the ACAM gave her the tools and skills necessary to go beyond teaching art and gain footing in the background operations of art museums.

What I loved: The instructor was really high energy and helpful throughout the class. What wasn’t so great: I was disappointed that there was no real instruction. The teacher described all of the materials available to us but it was basically paint, magazines, yarn, tissue paper and some gels and pumice. It seems more like a class geared towards kids.

It was my first time going to a paint night and the instructor made the experience better because she was very encouraging and patient! The setting was also great where it wasn’t over crowded which I feared. Overall a very pleasant experience and tons of fun!

The teacher was AMAZING, and so was the experience of being in the museum. However, my one complaint is that this class needed way more than 2 hours. For the price and work we were doing it was not even close to enough time to complete one project, let along two. The other beginner's classes I have taken, which were mostly just drawing stages of still lives, were 3 hours, and some even let us run over. They should consider either lowing the price or making the class longer, as a trip downtown to the museum and then to spend under two hours drawing felt a bit wasteful.

Absolutely terrific. Jessie was wonderful...lowkey, helpful, patient...excellent in demonstrating points such as ways to hold pencil...like a harmonica; explaining the differences in the numbering/lettering of pencils and what each drew; suggestions of views; using eraser as a tool for drawing....and list goes on. She walked around constantly checking with each of the seven of us. Her sense of humor and phrasing were also appreciated.
