Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this beekeeping class:

This two-day class will introduce students to Natural/Organic Beekeeping with a Biodynamic influence.

You will come away with the knowledge, as well as the inspiration to nurture your honeybees and respect these hardworking, gentle creatures who live in complex and beautiful communities.  This class will provide a broad understanding of the responsibilities and challenges entailed in this undertaking, so you can be knowledgable, loving and confidant beekeepers.  This class will be helpful to beginning and semi-experienced beekeepers.  We can help you obtain bees and we suggest you wait until after the class to purchase your equipment so you have a better understanding of your choices.

Intro to Organic Beekeeping  (Saturday 10am - 1pm & 2pm - 5pm)

Learn about the basic requirements and responsibilities for organic beekeeping. Understand the community of a hive and critical aspects of honeybee biology.  We will discuss the tools and equipment involved, elements of site selection, and where you can obtain honeybees.  Understanding certain intrinsic concepts will help you be a better beekeeper.  There is a demonstration of assembling a wooden hive, and extensive class handouts.

Understanding and Caring For Your Bees  (Sunday 10am - 1pm & 2pm - 5pm)

Topics will include: hive congruency and design to benefit the colony (including Top Bar Hives); Honeybee health and disease management the natural way; seasonal concerns and methods to keep your bees strong.

Follders with Handouts will be snail mailed to students, and we will also be sending links to films and reading material prior to class.

Refund Policy

If canceling within two days of the class we charge a $15 fee and refund the rest... otherwise full refund with advance notice.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.

These folks are the real deal. They live and breathe beekeeping. There are many other bozos teaching this stuff, but few, if any, have the experience and insight as Chris and Grai do. You'll take the first course and keep coming back for more, trust me.

Chris and Grai are incredible beekeepers and instructors. Their passion for beekeeping and care for nature and the environment are so obvious throughout the class which just gives all of their instruction even more meaning. When I entered the class, I had some experience in beekeeping, but they have such deep knowledge that it reinforced what I knew but went so much deeper into all aspects of beekeeping. They have a great ability to share both their love of beekeeping and the practical side of it. How do you put the boxes together, how do you use foundation, how do you add boxes, how do you do an inspection, how should you test for and treat mites -- and so much more. This is one of the most valuable classes I have ever taken and is a gift to take!

I took this course twice when it was offered at the Commons and thought it was an excellent introduction to beekeeping, with sufficient hands-on training and resources to allow me to take the plunge. Chris and Grai have a wonderful approach and are warm and friendly people; I highly recommend their classes.

When I began my journey into the world of Honeybees, it was difficult to find like-minded folks who use methods that primarily consider the well being of the Honeybee and how we relate to the natural world. Honeybee Lives is one of the very few teaching an approach to keeping bees that is more bee-centered, organic, and about the husbandry between the Honeybee and humankind. They taught me that Honeybees are calling us to wake up and shift our approach toward our recourses, that commercial beekeeping, loss of habitat, and pesticide use is creating devistating consequences and have sent them into severe decline. But- in response to this, there is a worldwide movement of natural beekeepers emerging: those who seek to find more sustainable ways in living with this creature. So as my journey continues and dives deeper and deeper, Grai and Chirs are at the heart of it. Bee well. bzzz

Chris and Grai conduct an informative and inspiring class. I highly recommend their class. It's an excellent balance of intuition and science backed approaches to beekeeping. I overcame my reluctance to tackle the challenges of beekeeping in an age of many obstacles and frustrations because of this class. The reward is a meditative, yet physical practice. Plus, if all goes well, there's HONEY! My recommendation is TAKE THE CLASS!
