What you'll learn in this welding class:

What makes this Course Unique is that is is taught by an artist who has experience teaching both sculptors and welders. She is a Part-Time Associate Professor at Parsons School of Design, teaching Metal Fabrication. This class is an empowering experience for both beginners as well as people who have experienced welding in the past. The class is also unique because it will be "limited to 2 people".You will receive individual help. The Studio has a wall of open windows for excellent ventilation.

In this two-hour session you will become familiar with using a TIG machine. The focus will be technique. We will cover how to choose the right tungsten for the job, set the gauge, use the foot pedal, and weld. We will discuss the many advantages of TIG welding when setting up a shop. Tig welding is a popular method used in bicycle frames and motorcycles.

Gas welding or Mig welding or Arc Welding.

Note:  Safety is a priority. The torch and tools will be sanitized before each class. We will all wear masks. This is a common practice even when welding during normal conditions. Please bring your own mask to the class. Latex gloves are provided to wear under the welding gloves if you desire.

  • A Gate Pass will be emailed the day before the Welding session.
  • Wear cotton clothes that can get dirty. Do not wear clothes you care about. Long cotton pants or jeans with closed toe shoes and socks. Bring a cotton long sleeve sweatshirt.
  • Welding gear, gloves, and welding hood are supplied and included with session.

Introduction to Tig

The class was exactly what I was hoping for. Michelle started the session by explaining the most important aspects of how welding works and and basics on how to setup the machine. We proceeded to do a number of different types of welds with materials of the same and different thicknesses. At the end I put together some scraps of metal to make something fun or useful. I choose fun. Today I showed it to a friend who welds and he said the welds were really smooth - he was impressed. The outcome of the class was more than expected. I feel confident enough to do a bit of welding on may own but with a friend nearby just in case. The challenges were different than what I expected. Happily so.

I never welded before and this class was great for beginners even though TIG is an advanced technique. Michelle walked us through setups and we spent most of our time welding with both steel and aluminum. The class was really informative, hands on, and a lot of fun. I will definitely take another.

Really enjoyed the energy and pace of the class. Doing a small 2 student group allowed for more a hands on time while still being able to observe another beginner at work. Michelle is very knowledgeable, a great instructor! I highly recommend all of her courses.

Excellent experience. Michelle knew exactly what she was doing and my girlfriend and I had a blast. We also were thrilled that we were able to make some unique things of our own and take them home. Some of the best 2 hours I’ve spent in a very long time. Would absolutely recommend
