Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this figure drawing class:

The uninstructed session starts with short poses at the beginning to warm up. The longest pose will be 20 minutes. We take a 5-minute break every 20 minutes.

What to bring:

  • We recommend a drawing pad and pencils or charcoal.
  • We can also accommodate small watercolor sets.

Please note:

  • We cannot accommodate dry pastels (for health reasons), open ink containers, or paint other than watercolor.
  • Absolutely no photography while the model is posing.
  • Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the moderator to prevent disruption to other artists.
  • The doorman will check your VACCINATION PROOF AND PHOTO ID before you can enter the building. You may use NYS Excelsior Pass (link below) or present a photo of your completed vaccination card. We will also require quests to wear masks – These policies as needed to keep our community safe.
  • Because of the limited space, we can not offer any refunds for the session. Thank you for your understanding.

Looking forward to seeing you!

Refund Policy

No refund unless the school cancels the class.

We do honor change-of-date requests for in-person sketch classes with at least 5 business days' notice and for workshops with 8 business days' notice.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.

Nice, mellow drop-in drawing class - complete with nice music and cookies! The organizer is very cool, as are the folks taking the class. The models vary and are all very professional.

Brought my partner here for figure drawing on his 40th bday. We had an excellent time. He is an oil painter (portraits) and I am a cartoonist but we haven’t been to a live drawing session in too long. The space was lovely, small group, inviting for new comers. The model was great, and looked at everyone’s work while staying kind and appreciative across folks skill levels. Would recommend and will return. Thanks!

Jeff was so nice and friendly! I hadn’t been to a drawing class since graduating about 15 years ago, and it all started coming back to me as each pose changed. Really nice people and community! I will definitely be coming back.

Model was excellent. Very professional. Participants were very quiet and polite. Not much interaction, which was fine for me.

Great space. I really enjoy the small group setting and seeing everyone’s different art style. One thing to note, is that this is not an instructional course. The model goes through a variety of timed poses which is regulated by the moderator. everyone was very professional and welcoming.

Nice uninstructed class. Room hot—even model was sweating. But class leader is kind and helpful and class is run professionally. Excellent place to practice skills.

Is this class good for a beginner who has no experience sketching live model? Will someone guide you on how to sketch or you quickly follow one person who is sketching.
Answer from Nadine B. Verified Student
I am a beginner with no experience with figure drawing. I fell right in and was quite comfortable. No instruction so feel free to talk and share with others as folks seemed friendly and open. You can share your work or not but if you want feedback or tips, you can talk with others. Very friendly bunch.

Hi there! The Saturday class is not instructed, so Drawing New York recommends to have some experience. There is an instructor there should students have questions, but the room in generally silent. Hope this helps!

Question from Joel D.
Hello, I was wondering if it's okay to use charcoal to draw rather than the recommended 2H/2B pencil? I am a total beginner and wanted to start drawing with this. Thank you, Joel
Answer from ED K. Verified Student
You can use any medium you would like but oil would not work. Some do watercolor. I prefer compressed charcoal sticks.
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Joel! That will be fine. A beginner might have more control with pencils rather than charcoal but it is fine if you choose to start there. Hope this helps!
