Printmaking & Mood

Drypoint and monotype are the most accessible and striking techniques for transforming drawing and painting skills with the rich possibilities of the printing press.

Students will participate in 5 hours of shaping, scratching, and inking plates to discover the extraordinary subtlety and mood of these methods.

This class is an ideal introduction to the potential of the fine art print for artists of all levels.

Students will leave the workshop with a much clearer idea of what printmaking can do and how to replicate and adapt these methods in their own process.

The workshop will include:

1. Introduction (~20 min.)
   - A presentation by Camilla on her own work and the traditions of painterly prints.
   
   
2. Technical Demonstration (~40 min.)
   - Camilla will demonstrate how to make custom plastic printing plates. Camilla often works from recycled plastics and encourages participants to bring clamshell boxes and other lightweight, thin, and durable plastic sheets/films. HOWEVER, plastic plates will be provided.
   - The entire class will scratch a sample plate that Camilla will print. This test will give participants a clear idea of technical possibilities.
   
   
3. Open workshop I (~2 hours)
   - Come prepared with photos or sketches for reference or tracing. Working on plastic plates, students can trace underlying images.
   - In these two hours, students will be able to do all the necessary drawing, plate shaping, inking, and drafts necessary to get a good handle on the techniques and printing using the press. Camilla will be present at all times for troubleshooting and production assistance.
   
   
4. Break (~20 min.)
   
   
5. Open workshop II (~55 min.)
   - Students will continue their technical exploration, creating finished drafts and experimenting with multi-plate layering. Camilla will advise and guide.
   
   
6. Class discussion + Q&A (~ 15 min.)
   - Camilla will lead a class discussion, reviewing what students have accomplished and where they can take their experiments next.

While other materials are included, these are recommended:

• Sketches, Photos, or other Visual References
• Recycled plastic - clamshells or other durable plastic sheets

Please note:

• Please arrive 20 minutes early. Parking is residential and easy.
• Class is indoors, masked, and requires proof of vaccination.
