Julian Scaff

Teaches at General Assembly

Julian began his design career at the age of five with a box of Legos. In college he studied architecture, film, graphic design and art, and has never respected the traditional lines between different disciplines. Julian approaches user experience design from a multidiciplinary perspective, combining his experience with creating cinematic narratives with ethnographic research methods borrowed from anthropology, and the intuitive nature of human experience through making installation art. He has done award-winning design work for Idealab, Honda Motors, GoTo, Monster, JobTrak, and most recently Designing Nation. As an educator he has taught and lectured at USC, the Los Angeles Film School, Webster University, LIU Beirut, and VCU Qatar. Julian is also a digital artist, electronic musician, and published author. As a designer he is passionate about simplicity and believes that great design can change the world. His book recommendations for every designer’s personal library: Simple and Usable by Giles Colborne; The Laws of Simplicity by John Maeda; and The Book of Tea by Kakuzo Okakura.
